PHP Fog, Your New Drupal Development Platform?

Thu, 03/03/2011 - 17:54 -- Ben Hosmer

I just received my invite today from PHP Fog, and quickly set about trying out the service.

From their frontpage:

Reliable Cloud Platform.
Built for PHP.

PHP Fog leverages the cloud so you don’t have to. We built an N-Tier PHP system where deploys are as easy as a git push.

This service appears to be an instant development platform, using Amazon Elastic Cloud Servers.

Right now, you get your choice of these applications to instantly install:

  1. Wordpress
  2. Drupal
  3. Joomla
  4. SugarCRM

They also offer you these frameworks:

  1. Cake
  2. Shopify
  3. Kohana
  4. Zend

Or you can create your own. I've used Webenabled.com for all of my development needs for the past year. This service seems similar, but without some of the automation.

Most of my development work relies on a command-line SSH shell and an FTP client to add files to the server. If you are used to this kind of workflow, you will find PHPFog very jarring at first. The only way to get your files onto your server is to use GIT, a version control system that Drupal.org is now using.

At first I found this to be very constraining, but after trying it I realized the elegance and simplicity of the method.

You now have an instant undo and a very clean interface! The control panel will seem stark at first:

On the surface, it seems very simple. After you use it though, you will grow to appreciate the simplicity and realize that they have taken steps to make a very complex process simple to use so you can get back to development.

Overall I have found I really like the service and have enjoyed it immensely. Lucas Carlson responded to my emails very quickly and offered assistance when I had some questions.
