The New Kindle Available August 27th

Thu, 07/29/2010 - 16:27 -- Ben Hosmer

Amazon is set to release the newest Kindle Wireless Reading Device for only $139.00 in August.

I've been a kindle user since 2nd Generation and have enjoyed almost every minutes of it.

The one complaint I had was the updates of blog subscriptions. Often I had to force an update by going to the Check for Download option on the menu. Even then though, I had a hard time getting the most recent blog updates. I finally canceled my blog subscriptions out of frustration.

Does the kindle compete with the Apple iPad?

ipadipad

Absolutely not. They aren't devices that serve the same function. The ipad is better designed to do many things with the typical apple flair of ease-of-use and design. It offers beautiful graphics and a multimedia experience that is so far unmatched. The ipad is a multimedia device that can play music, video, browse the web, and read books and magazines specially designed and enhanced for the ipad.

The Kindle on the other hand does one thing and one thing only: Let you read. Amazon needs to be careful to not overload the kindle with features and try to compete with the ipad. The newest kindle includes social features and an .mp3 player. If you are a die-hard reader of books then, if you haven't already, you might want to get a kindle. If you're curious about what the display is like it is not like reading from a laptop or computer. The E-Ink, while it doesn't simulate paper perfectly. does a good job of presenting clear text that is easy to read. The updated version also promises even easier to read text.

You could go to Barnes and Noble and look at the Nook, which is their own version of an E-Reader, since Amazon is the only maker of an e-reader that doesn't have a physical store that you can actually hold the device before you buy it. The display is similar to the Kindle, even though the interface differs. It also includes a color touch-screen at the very bottom of the device that the kindle is lacking.
